Vassilis Angelopoulos

Vassilis Angelopoulos (Greek: Βασίλης Αγγελόπουλος; born February 13, 1965)^[1] is a Greek American physicist. He is a specialist on Space and Astrophysical Plasmas. He is THEMIS principal investigator at the University of California, Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory, in Berkeley, California. Since July, 2007, he has been on the faculty of the Department of Earth & Space Sciences and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

• 1986: B.S. in Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
• 1988: M.S. in Physics, UCLA
• 1993: Ph.D. in Physics with specialization in Space Plasma Physics, UCLA

Awards and honors:

• 1986-1992: Fulbright fellowship for the duration of Ph.D. program.
• 1994: Fred Scarf Award, conferred by American Geophysical Union’s Space Physics and Aeronomy Section to the best Ph.D. thesis in that section.
• 2000: Zeldovich Medal, conferred by the Russian Academy of Sciences and COSPAR on young scientists for excellence and achievement.
• 2001: he received the James B. Macelwane Medal, conferred by the American Geophysical Union in recognition of significant contributions to the geophysical sciences by young scientists.

Angelopoulos has two children, Nikolas and Constance
